Toxicidade do Tabaco: uma revisão integrativa sobre a periculosidade advinda de um mal lícito que assola o mundo
Resumo:
Introduction: 9.8% of the Brazilian population has a smoking habit. A WHO study found that smoking is responsible for the deaths of more than 8 million people each year. In Brazil, tobacco dependence causes approximately 157 thousand deaths per year, which generates an annual cost to society of approximately R $ 57 billion. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the world. It is an epidemic health condition that causes physical, psychological and behavioral dependence. Smoking is estimated to be related to about 50 diseases. Thus, this research aimed to raise publications that show the danger that the use of tobacco can cause human health. Review: It is an integrative literature review. The collection of scientific data and the systematization of information come from scientific productions published since 2015, in Portuguese and English, indexed in the database of MEDLINE-PUBMED, LILACS and SCIELO. Nicotine affects the respiratory system and causes several damages to the smoker's health, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial diseases, asthma exacerbations, among others. Coronavirus can pose an additional threat to smokers, with smoking being seen as a risk factor for admission to the ICU and mortality in inpatients treated for COVID-19. Discussion: Although tobacco production moves the economy, on the other hand, there is a much higher percentage of spending on health treatments. Tobacco use in youth has been spreading and making young people more prone to addiction, affecting their health. Final remarks: Tobacco consumption is extremely harmful to health. Considering the high cost that this habit causes, massive campaigns supported by the public power, should be stimuli aiming at guiding, regarding the risks of the use of this harmful and avoidable habit.
